DeMint Staffers Save Drunk Man Laying in Interstate

Saturday I was coming home from Myrtle Beach and as I was getting off of I-20 onto I-77 I was reminded of this little incident I had in 2003 when I was working for DeMint for Senate during the primary. Everyone has his or her own little campaign story and this was always one of my favorites.

Most South Carolina political operatives remember the 2003 Horry County GOP Convention when all hell broke loose. It was probably one of the most hostile conventions in recent history. The convention lasted until about 2:00 AM with Duane Oliver and his opposition nearly coming to blows. At about midnight I decided that it was about time to pack it up, so Dawn, the DeMint intern, and I hit the road.

At about 2:30 AM, as we were getting on the ramp connecting I-77 and I-20, we noticed an African American man laying in the middle of the Interstate.  I came about 3 feet from hitting the guy, swerving off the road, and nearly taking out the guardrail. We thought the guy was dead, so we stopped, called 911, and proceeded to drag this guy out of the Interstate.

Turns out, it was just a drunk homeless man who somehow wondered out into the middle of the Interstate and passed out.  We don’t know how long he was there, but as the fire trucks, police, and EMS showed up, we felt pretty good about saving this guy’s life.

Anyway, how often do you see a drunk man laying in the middle of the Interstate?  Pretty cool, huh?

Only “in the middle of the road” story:

Saw two cats bumping uglies at the entrance to the Gamecock Bi-Lo at 11 p.m. Two other cats were nearby, watching. Kind of sorry I broke up their party.
