Should I Run For Office?

A Ten Point Check List To Help You Decide.

1.    Will I run to win?
2.    Am I right on the issues?
3.    Can I get the money?
4.    Do I have the time to campaign?
5.    Do I have the energy, desire, and motivation to do the hard work it takes to win?
6.    Is my family supportive?
7.    Am I willing to put myself, my family, my friends, and my business through a negative campaign?
8.    Can I overcome my personal baggage?
9.    Can I serve?
10.   Do I want to serve for the right reasons?

A gentlemen who shall remain nameless called me last week after reading my blog and told me that he is thinking about running for the South Carolina State House. Most potential candidates ask me if I think they can win, but this man asked me something different – “how should I decided whether or not to run for office?

A great question.

The first thing that came to my mind was “can you raise the money?” Then I asked “will you work your butt off?”

Question after question starting popping up, so I told him “let me think about it for a day.  Stay tuned to my blog over the next couple days and I’ll post a series of questions for you.  Answer those questions and give me a call back.”
