Senator DeMint Gets What It Takes To Win

By now you know that I’m a pretty big fan of Senator Jim DeMint. I was one of the first guys hired on his Senatorial campaign and I’ve been delighted to remain part of the team. He is a man who continuously impresses me and it makes me very proud that the Under The Power Lines crew gets to help him spread his conservative message across the nation.

I started working for Senator DeMint six years ago and at the time, there is no way you would have ever convinced me that he would be the large national figure he is today. Senator DeMint is a quite policy wonk. He’s not flashy. He’s not the type who seeks attention. But he does work tirelessly to bring attention to the most pressing issues facing American families and that does draw attention to him.

In a time when we hear many politicians running their mouths just to be heard, Senator DeMint is the embodiment of a thinker. He sees problems and finds creative, yet conservative solutions that will move our nation forward. The biggest problem he sees is Washington itself, a broken city controlled by special interests and career politicians.

When talking to Senator DeMint, watching his latest videos, or reading his recent op-eds, you can’t help but notice that Senator DeMint gets it. He knows what it takes to restore true freedom and in his latest op-ed, we see that he also gets what it takes to regain Republican dominance.

You see, many believe that idealistic Republican right-wingers are tearing the party in two and even Senator DeMint acknowledges that we need the center-Republicans because only a “big tent” party can win. But Senator DeMint also acknowledges that the center-Republicans must once again embrace the basic tenets of the party. They must help reform government and work to restore freedom to America. That’s a message that can reconnect the party and resonate with voters.

Senator DeMint writes:

In the wake of two successive electoral defeats and the likelihood of a 60-vote Democrat majority in the Senate, what does it even mean to be a Republican today? Moderate Republicans are right to remind conservatives that they cannot build a center-right coalition without the center part. And conservatives are right to remind moderates that Republicans only succeed when we rally around clear principles…

To win back the trust of the American people, we must be a “big tent” party. But big tents need strong poles, and the strongest pole of our party — the organizing principle and the crucial alternative to the Democrats — must be freedom. The federal government is too big, takes too much of our money, and makes too many of our decisions. If Republicans can’t agree on that, elections are the least of our problems.

If the American people want a European-style social democracy, the Democratic Party will give it to them. We can’t win a bidding war with Democrats…

A Republican recommitment to freedom and limited government will foster an agenda that will strengthen and invigorate our party. Freedom has worked for our party and our country before. It will again, if we let it.

EXACTLY!!

I don’t know man. Advocating freedom to the free seems superfluous; some would even say nonsensical. DeMint seems to be tilting at the windmills of American opinion.
