Shane Massey…Proving That Character Still Matters
I’ve been running political campaigns for what seems like forever and in that time I’ve met few as genuine as South Carolina State Senator Shane Massey. He’s one of those guys who puts politics and partisan labels to the side and positions himself where his conscience says he should be. It just so happens that his conscience leans pretty far right as evident by his consistent work for fiscal responsibility and conservative policy.
I’ll never forget meeting Shane Massey. State Senator Tommy Moore decided to leave the Senate for a high paying PayDay lending job and everyone thought that Strom Thurmond, Jr. was a shoe in for the seat never before held by a Republican. Strom Jr. decided to pursue his legal career instead and most Republicans gave up on the seat.
That’s when a Shane Massey stepped up. We were looking for a candidate to back when a friend called and told me “Shane’s honesty is what we need in government…he can connect to people…you need to call him.” I called him and the rest is history. Shane surprised everyone. He worked harder than any candidate I’ve ever helped, dominating a primary and runoff.
The general election became a test run or the Democratic presidential campaigns. Because Democratic candidate Bill Clyburn was the cousin of Congressional Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, all the presidential campaigns sent their teams to Senate District 25. The Obama, Clinton, Edwards, and Richardson campaigns were all accounted for while any sign of the Republican campaigns were noticeably invisible.
Shane surprised everyone by becoming the first Republican to take SC Senate Seat 25 but the hard part was yet to come. Shane faced tough Democratic opposition less than a year later with Barack Obama at the top of the ticket. Oh, did I tell you that Massey’s district is 40% minority…the highest Republican BVAP (Black Voting Age Population) in the state?
Again, Shane surprised the state by winning in November by 8%, proving that character and hard work still count in politics.
In just two years, Shane Massey has become one of the most ardent fiscal conservatives in the State Senate. He helped lead the fight for “on the record” voting and he single handily pushed earmark reform through the State Senate. All of this while serving as an example for character and honesty in government. That’s why he consistently comes out on top despite being labeled the underdog.
I’m proud to call State Senator Shane Massey a friend. And I’m excited that he’s running for the United States Congress.
