I’m really good at making goals and hitting them.

Set a goal.
Determine the path.
Create a timeline.
Break down the timeline to monthly and weekly milestones.
Break that down into daily to dos.
Stay dedicated.
Measure and pivot when needed.

It’s a pretty simple formula, as long as you can remain firm on point six –stay dedicated. Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances can jump in the way too late in the game for point seven, measure and pivot, to even matter. That’s when it’s time to uncover the hidden point, point eight –reset and try again.

All year I’ve had a big goal of setting a marathon PR at the Kiawah Marathon on December 9th. That’s this Saturday.

I’ve trained hard for months and I was at the final two steps, run a 20 miler and taper. It was on my 20 miler that I first realized I was getting sick. My heart rate skyrocketed, I was dizzy and I puked twice between hailing an Uber at mile 7. I tried running another five miles that afternoon and then another six the following day (last Tuesday). That six miler was the straw that broke the camel’s back. By the time I got home a couple hours later, I was shaking and sweating profusely. I went to bed and woke up at 2 am with a 102.8 degree fever. I’ve been in bed pretty much every hour since.

It’s now one week later and I’m finally up and back to work. I feel better but I feel far from great. My body is weakened and my sinuses are crushed. It’s time to call it. There’s no friggin’ way I’m PRing at Kiawah this weekend. And because I can’t PR, there’s no reason to run the race at all. It sucks.

In less than a month, the entire family leaves for our first Disney World trip, where Elizabeth and I will be taking on the Dopey Challenge: a 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon in four straight days. We’ve dropped a fortune on this trip. It would be stupid of me to try to run Kiawah, kill my immune system even more and not feel great for Disney.

So here I am, totally bummed. I didn’t hit one of my biggest goals for 2017. So point eight it is –reset and try again.

What I’m Watching: The Gifted – a new Marvel TV show set in the X-Men universe.

What I’m Listening To: I’m really feeling Shovels and Rope today. I’ve listened to Little Seeds four times already.

What I’m In To: Journaling and meditation. If I can’t train my body right now, I might as well concentrate on training my mind.

What I’m Not Into: Closing out the books for 2017 and concentrating on company financials. THE EFFING WORST!
