There are so many self help books and online experts giving advice as to how you can take your life to the next level. Nearly all of them skip over the most important piece of advice, the actual foundation for all the other advice. If you don’t get this one thing right you will absolutely fail at everything you try to do. You will fail at starting a business, building new streams of income, getting fit, crossing finish lines and pretty much everything else.
This is imperative – You must have a supportive partner.
All of this is a team sport. Any person trying to do big things must have support and not just at the office or on a race course. Physical, emotional and spiritual support starts at home. If that support isn’t there the whole plan crumbles under the weight of time and stress.
I’ve seen it. One person has big plans. The spouse is totally not on board. Not only does the plan fail but typically the marriage does too.
Today I’m in Colorado to crew and pace my political mentor as he crushes the Leadville 100, one of America’s hardest ultramarathons. Elizabeth is back home with the boys and holding down the fort alone. That’s not easy over four days. Someone take her some booze. She prefers champagne.
Really, this is nothing compared to the daily support I get when I’m back home. She helps me train for three hours a day and work around the clock. She’s there for me when I’m injured or sick or having a really tough work day when I just need someone to cry to. She tells me when an idea is stupid or when I need to change direction. She lets me know that an employee isn’t a good fit and when my focus is off. She encourages me when I’m on the right track. She’s always there to cheer me on during a race or to give me a hug when I’m completely drained. She’s the person who tells me to just stop moving and get in the bed. She even reads the Wall Street Journal and sends me clips every morning. 😀
Every accomplishment is also Elizabeth’s. And that’s how it should be in marriage. So if you want to join that new fitness program and lose weight, you better get your spouse on board. Want to create a business, invest in crypto or buy a rental property? You better get your spouse on board. Want to take your life to the next level? Get your spouse on board. It’s the foundation of every plan.
