What did we accomplish this year?
Covid still plagues the world. Nations remain shut down. The rich and the poor are further apart. We as a people are more divided than ever. Our leaders don’t lead. Our workers don’t work. The very foundations of our nations are crumbling while we stare at our phones and allow algorithms and media executives to control our feelings, and even worse, our thoughts.
Perhaps change is finally beyond our reach when even doing one’s own research is mocked. Maybe the problems are just too much to bare for a citizenry too oblivious to face them. Everything is fine. Someone else will handle it. Or maybe we’ve fallen too far down the clickhole to even care anymore.
Some still care. Maybe even the majority still care. They care so much they think of nothing else. Or rather, feel nothing else. Fueled by echo chambers and cable news pundits, they point their energies toward the enemy, blaming them for every problem, refusing to budge and attacking anyone and everyone even hinting of compromise. They too see the nation crumbling but refuse to acknowledge they are holding the sledge hammer, day in and day out pounding down on the brittle ground keeping us connected.
There is a a narrow opportunity, a single escape we must run toward. We must turn inward and put up walls protecting our minds from manipulation. We must put down the phones and turn off the TVs. We must see truth as truth, fact as fact and people as people. We must cut the leash and refuse to be anything other than freethinking humans.
2022 is an important year. The course we are heading can be changed, but the divergent path is rapidly approaching. There does come a tipping point when manipulation wins and going backward becomes impossible. 2021 delivered a devastating blow to free thought but it’s not dead yet. Whether it survives 2022 is up to us.
