Your Daily Positive Vibes: How I Channel 9/11 Every Single Day
A few years ago I read a sales book in which the author recommended creating a “trigger” to put himself in go-mode. Since then I’ve heard it recommended by numerous folks – endurance athletes and entrepreneurs alike. Jesse Itzler calls it a “start switch” He writes that it’s “a ritual that sends a signal to your brain that it’s time to rise to the occasion.”
I have a trigger that I use multiple times every day – before training, before a race, before an important call, before a big business pitch. My trigger tells me that it’s time to flip the switch from being laid back Wesley to full on beast mode Wesley.
I thought long and hard about what I could use as my trigger. My thoughts kept coming back to Todd Beamer.
Todd Beamer wasn’t some stud. He was just a normal dude like me who went beast mode and did something extraordinary. When I think of “rise to the occasion” Todd Beamer is always the first name that pops in my head.
Todd passed away on September 11, 2001. He was a passenger on United Flight 93. He was a husband, and the father of two sons – a three-year-old and a one-year – and an unborn daughter.
Todd wasn’t just a badass. He was a hero who helped save this nation from further disaster. No one knows exactly where Flight 93 was heading but al Qaeda detainees have claimed it was heading for either the White House or the United States Capital. It didn’t reach those destinations because Todd and others decided to fight back. They stormed the airplane cockpit. The plane lost control and crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania killing Todd, thirty-nine other passengers and crew and the four terrorists.
The last words heard on the flight recorder where from Todd saying “let’s roll” right before storming the cockpit. I obviously didn’t know Todd but as a father of three I know exactly what he was thinking when those words came out of his mouth. I hope his children know that not every man rises to the occasion. It takes a special breed and he was of that breed.
When it’s time for me to rise to the occasion I close my eyes, I take a deep breathe and I say out loud “let’s roll.” Todd Beamer is my trigger.
Today I pray for Todd Beamer’s family, all the victims of 9/11 and all the men and women who rose to the occasion and ran toward danger to help their neighbors.
I hope you all have an amazing Wednesday full of Positive Vibes.
