Instagram had to make a move. They went from being the destination of choice for millennials to playing second fiddle once Snapchat exploded.
Given that they’re owned by Facebook and Facebook has a tendency to just straight up steal good ideas and make them native in their platform, it’s no big surprise to me that Instagram put Snapchat’s Stories features in its platform.
And by “put Snapchat’s Stories features in its platform” I mean they all-out jacked Snapchat and embedded it into Instagram. That happened, leaving everyone wondering why they should be using both.
From my previous ramblings about Snapchat, which have been numerous and all over the map, I’ve been pretty consistent on one huge gripe—finding your friends and new people to follow is one huge pain in the ass on Snapchat. I think its discovery tools are pretty awful and, basically, Snapchat is forcing you to use other platforms, like Facebook or Twitter, to tell people about your Snapchat page.
Instagram, on the other hand, allows you to connect to your Facebook page, import your friends and then follow them on the photo app. They even go so far as to alert you when one of your Facebook friends has joined Instagram. Boom! Easy peasy. That has allowed me to find all my buddies and in turn grow my following.
With Instagram, most of us already have a good following. With Snapchat, we have to start from scratch and then use other platforms, like Instagram, to tell our friends to follow us.
That makes you wonder, if you’re one of those people who haven’t jumped on Snapchat yet, but have been on Instagram, why would you jump to Snapchat? I’m not saying that this is going to be a Snapchat killer by any stretch of the imagination. But I do think it has the possibility to slow its growth, particularly with the older folks who typically migrate by following the younger early adopters.
I got pumped about Instagram for a while. You can find some great photos of my son, Harlowe, and his hat obsession there. #harloweshat. But lately I’ve been ALL ABOUT Snapchat. I would be more about it if they would give us an easier way to find our friends and discover new folks to follow, just like Instagram does.
