A Crash Course in Cancel Culture

I couldn’t put this book down. It’s a quick read full of the type of information you only get from working in the trenches, like Wesley has, for the last two decades. It’s his personal story that really makes this book special though. There is something about the struggles that Wesley has personally persevered through that makes his advice resonate on a deeper level than most PR books. This is a great read for professionals and everyday social media users alike. Highly recommend!

Run to the fire!

Wesley is someone who you want on your team. He is always someone that you can count on, even at your worst. In this book, Wesley shares his expertise on how to survive and succeed in this new era of social media. He teaches you how to run to the fire with a plan in place. As a graduate student, this book reminded me to always be physically and mentally prepared for whatever comes my way. This is a great read for all small business owners and anyone interested in becoming a leader!

Be prepared.

Wesley is one of the nation’s leading political strategists and combines that knowledge with practical experience to produce an incredible book. Exceptionally well written and full of great advice. All leaders should read this and be prepared!

You need to read this book

One of the most readable and interesting business books I have come across yet, and I have read quite a few. I found it hard to put down which surprised me since I thought I was going to be reading another “business book”. Donehue’s personal history and experiences added an awesome level of depth and truth to the hard won knowledge shared in Under Fire. What I noticed halfway through was that it is written in a plain spoken almost conversational manner which is so refreshing considering the serious subject matter, not an easy feat for any writer. I will absolutely be putting some of the ideas from this book to use in my personal and professional life. Do yourself a favor and get this book.

The Problem you never want to have, the book you need to read.

Wesley Simply and effective lays out the risk and required steps everyone needs to consider and plan for in this new world of PR. It’s a problem you never want to have but you need to be prepared. I work in Crisis Mitigation and Planning and our mantra is “Hope is a bad plan”. Everyone has their own marketing and PR reps and agencies but when you have a specialized problem you want a brawler not a suit. Wes is a brawler and has a proven record of being effective in controlling the narrative and is exactly who you want to have on speed dial if in any of the situations he lays out in his book. He presents it in a clear and easy to understand manner and is something everyone should read.

This book is required reading for survival in modern society

Cancel Culture is real-unless you are Elon Musk or Joe Rogan. You aren’t either of these. This book levels that playing field. How to survive a crisis and thrive in a easy to read 13-point plan. Because some crises are of your own making and sometimes you are just a mom who gets savaged on the internet because you posted a video on making SpaghettiOs pie. Or a good guy who steps up to perform a heroic act only to find his entire internet history combed for evidence of any violation of decency real or imagined. Do you want to be fired because your adult stepson police officer shot a suspect?
This is the definitive strategy of beating back the vandals of reputation and livelihood written a PETA beating “worst person in the world” who happens to be a pretty decent guy.

A dose of reality and truth! You need to have a plan!

Wesley Donahue does an excellent job of bringing home hard truths in this book. I’m a former Boy Scout, and their motto is “Be Prepared” (also the title of Chapter 1 in Under Fire)….this book lies out the realities tied to being prepared and unprepared. Simply put, you need to have a plan in place for when a crisis can, and it will, blindside you on a random Thursday at 2:33PM from something as simple as a social media post that goes viral for example. Which is just one of numerous out of the blue situations that could encounter any organization in today’s cancel culture world. I highly encourage any leader to grab a copy and get it in your toolbox!
